BFA in Classical Chinese Dance

The purpose of the BFA program in classical Chinese dance is to systematically train students in the techniques, artistry, and theoretical framework necessary to perform, create, and advance classical Chinese dance. The program aims are:

  • To adequately prepare students for success in careers in performance, choreography, teaching, or stage production in classical Chinese dance.
  • To help students develop a genuine appreciation for the differences and commonalities between Chinese performing arts and their Western counterparts, whereby the students can facilitate cross-cultural communication through dance.
  • To nurture in students the integrity and ethicality necessary for building and sustaining a successful professional careerThe BFA program in classical Chinese dance has three concentrations students can select from: Performance and Choreography, Dance Production, and Dance Pedagogy.

Performance and Choreography coursework focuses on techniques, performance opportunities, and advanced choreography for those who aspire to be professional dancers and choreographers of classical Chinese dance. Through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on projects, and production opportunities, Dance Production prepares students for a career in scenic/graphic design, lighting, or management aspects of dance production. Dance Pedagogy covers foundational knowledge and practical skills and experience to prepare those who aspire to teach classical Chinese dance in classrooms and studios.

Upon completion of the BFA program, students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate professional-level techniques and performance ability in classical Chinese dance
  • Apply principles of dance composition to produce creative works, and
  • Sustain and advance classical Chinese dance using supportive theoretical knowledge.

The graduation requirements for the BFA in Classical Chinese Dance are a minimum of 129 credits, with a minimum overall GPA of 2.0 and a minimum major GPA of 2.5.
