The Department of Music currently offers two degree programs: Bachelor of Music (BM) in Performance and a Master of Music (MusM) in Performance.

The department develops rigorous performance skills. Students major in either Western or Chinese musical instruments and develop sensitivity to music of both cultural traditions. These programs are the only ones in the United States that offer students the opportunity to major in the performance of a traditional Chinese musical instrument. They are also the only baccalaureate and Master’s programs that require Western music majors to acquire basic competence in traditional Chinese music. As part of students’ cross-cultural training, Chinese instrumental majors are also required to develop basic competence in Western music.

Additionally, Fei Tian College’s Department of Music has an orchestra that combines Western and traditional Chinese musical instruments and regularly performs compositions that cross the boundaries of both traditions. Playing in the orchestra not only gives students in the BM and MusM programs unparalleled exposure to cross-cultural music, but also helps them gain insight into the differences and commonalities among different musical cultures and practices.
