Counseling Services

College students can face a variety of challenges during their years of study. As they enter college, they face being separated from their families, establishing themselves as independent adults, developing new relationships, and defining and committing themselves to a career. At the same time, they continue to deepen their understanding of themselves and their role and purpose in life.

As part of the College’s student retention policy, the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) at Fei Tian College provides a wide range of direct counseling, learning support, outreach, and training to help students meet these challenges and enhance their academic success and emotional, as well as spiritual, wellbeing. Appropriate off-campus referrals are made as needed.

Any student using the student counseling service is guaranteed confidentiality of the information he or she shares with the staff. Students who would like their confidential information to be shared with a third party, such as a family physician, faculty, or any other person, will be asked to complete and sign a consent form. A counselor may break confidentiality in the event that he or she learns that the student is in imminent danger (such as a suicidal threat), the student has made a serious threat against the life of another individual, or a child or vulnerable adult is being abused. The reason for such a break in confidentiality is for the safety of the student and/or others.

The Office of Student Affairs strives to help cultivate well- rounded individuals who are capable of dealing with challenges and adversity in a constructive manner. It offers a holistic approach to supporting students in developing the inner strength to handle negative emotions such as anxiety, stress, frustration, and depression. This approach includes individual and group counseling for students experiencing a variety of personal and emotional issues in addition to meditation exercise and discussion groups. These services are preventative and educational in nature.

Health Insurance

Students who are required to be covered by health insurance will be automatically enrolled in and charged for the FTC student health insurance plan unless a waiver is timely submitted demonstrating that they are covered by a comparable health insurance plan. The Office of Student Affairs provides consultations for those in need of health insurance.

Immunizations

Fei Tian College requires all students to provide proof of adequate immunization against measles, mumps, and rubella before permitting the student to enroll. A student may request a waiver of such a proof through one of the following three means: (1) a certificate from a physician stating that in the opinion of the physician such immunization is medically contraindicated; (2) a written statement that such immunization would be contrary to his or her religious beliefs; or (3) a laboratory report documenting immunity.

The College also requires students to either provide proof of immunization against meningococcal meningitis disease or sign (1) a response to receipt of meningococcal meningitis disease and vaccine information and (2) an acknowledgement of meningococcal disease risks and refusal of meningococcal meningitis immunization.

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) provides consultation and recommendations for students who do not have records of proper immunizations. For details about these requirements and exemptions, please visit the OSA.

Medical Services

The Office of Student Affairs (OSA) maintains information on the nearest hospitals and medical facilities. In the event of a medical emergency, students are directed to the nearest hospital emergency room or may call 911 for an ambulance.

Injuries incurred as the result of a College-related activity must be reported to the faculty or staff member in charge and to OSA within 24 hours of the time of the injury.

Public Security

Campus security is provided by the Office of Facility Operations in collaboration with the Office of Student Affairs. It includes security patrol, escort, transportation, and identification and access services to maintain a safe and secure campus environment that is conducive to learning, working, living, and visiting. A staff of trained personnel focus on crime prevention, safety education, and emergency preparedness. Safety education awareness programs are conducted for students throughout the academic year.
